For example, if a teams scores 21 points against a team that only gives up (on average) 14 points, they get a 150% for that game offensively. Talent level is determined by the program’s average recruiting rank (per Scout.com) over the 4 year span leading up to the year the game was played. Equivalent talent is defined as having an average recruiting rank difference within 10 ranking spots of an opponent. Ranking is since 2004. Years 2001-2003 did not have 3 years of prior data to calculate the talent level.

The formula is used to derive a coach’s future winning percentage based on point differential, rather than winning percentage itself. The formula for the expected winning percentage is:
WP % = Points For2.37 / (Points For2.37 + Points Against2.37).

Points Per Red Zone Drive is calculated by awarding 3 points for a field goal and 6 points for a touchdown in the red zone, then dividing by the total number of red zone drives. Non Red Zone Touchdown Share represents the percentage of offensive touchdowns scored that did not count as red zone drives because the scoring play occurred from outside the 20 yard line. Ranks and sorts all active and inactive head coaches (since 2004) by the percentage of quality defensive drives/possessions. Quality defensive possessions are drives that do not result in a score. Additionally, this ranking will break down quality possessions/drives that have 6 plays or less, last under 2 minutes, and cover less than 25 yards. This ranking will also track the percentage of drives that started in the opponents territory and did not allow the opponent to cross the 50 yard line. Ranking includes games vs. FCS opponents. Ranks and sorts all active and inactive head coaches (since 2005) by first down offensive success/efficiency on a play by play basis, broken down by rushing and passing plays. A first down play is considered a ‘success’ if the play gains 40% or more of the required yardage, or results in a touchdown. Default ranking is showing active coaches only.

CBTN Head Coach Rankings – Coach Effect

Ranks and sorts every active and inactive Head Coach based on their performance against teams with the equivalent talent, superior talent, and inferior talent using a Coach Effect Score. Talent level is determined by the program’s average recruiting rank (per Scout.com) over the 4 year span leading up to the year the game was played. Equivalent talent is defined as having an average recruiting rank difference within 10 ranking spots of an opponent. Ranking is since 2004. Years 2001-2003 did not have 3 years of prior data to calculate the talent level. Games versus FCS Teams are not included. Coach Effect is calculated by assigning positive and negative point values to individual games based on the talent level differential and the game location. The general concept of the coach effect is that superior talent teams should beat inferior talent teams, and that games with equivalent talent on each side should be be decided by coaching ability.
